The news: Taylor Farms is recalling prepared foods made with jalapeños, including salsas and guacamole sold at Walmart, Target, Kroger, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and Hannaford, over salmonella concerns, per CNBC.
Zooming out: The cyclospora outbreak already hit restaurant traffic hard.
The new recalls now extend consumers’ anxieties about food safety from restaurants to grocery aisles. Fresh iceberg lettuce unit sales fell 15.3% YoY in the four weeks ended July 25, following an 11.1% decline in the prior period, per NielsenIQ data cited by CNBC. Because Taylor Farms sells much of its produce unbranded, consumers have little ability to identify and avoid its products, increasing the risk of a broader pullback from fresh produce.
Why it matters: Even before the latest incidents, consumer trust in the food system was already waning. Just 55% of US adults said they were confident the US food supply is safe last year, down from 70% in 2023, per the International Food Information Council's annual survey. Only 51% of US adults trust the FDA to deliver reliable health information, down from 61% in 2023, per KFF.
Implications for food and beverage brands: The problem is becoming harder to contain. What began as a restaurant-traffic crisis concentrated among chains serving affected lettuce has now spread to prepared foods sold by some of the country’s largest grocers, including private-label salsas and guacamole.
The lack of visibility into the supply chain compounds the problem, because consumers have few means of determining what is “safe” and what isn’t. That uncertainty could prompt shoppers to avoid entire categories rather than individual products, much as the earlier outbreak weighed on lettuce sales.
That puts the onus on retailers and restaurant chains to prioritize clear, proactive communication about sourcing, testing, and the removal of affected items. It’s a challenging situation for every company involved, but those that proactively communicate—or even overcommunicate—have a better chance of preserving consumer trust than those that take a more reactive approach.
