Patients trust their medical team most for:
Why it matters: Patients with serious illnesses seek out connections with people who share their experiences and are going to online channels for education and support.
Implications for pharma brands and marketers: Even as clinicians drive treatment decisions, condition-specific online communities and content creators can shape patients' understanding of what it's actually like to live with cancer.
Oncology drugmakers can tap into these online peer conversations to identify what patients are really asking, using those insights both to equip clinicians for visits and to build authentic partnerships with trusted patient communities. For example, healthcare professional materials could anticipate common patient questions sparked by social media and online forums, such as treatment eligibility, reported side effects, or alternative cures, and equip clinicians with resources to address them. Meanwhile, direct drug promotion by creators is less effective and not how cancer patients currently rely on their peers. Instead, marketers should partner with patient advocates to create content about real-world guidance—such as treatment prep, work balance, and emotional coping—where peer credibility is of high value to cancer patients.
